WINGS ON A GUITAR
If Elvis Hadn't Died!
Cruise back to Elvis' page
"Wings On A Guitar" is a touching story of Elvis Presley had he not died on August 16, 1977. This book is about as close as you can get to what "COULD HAVE BEEN." I found myself associating myself with the character 'Wade' as this is how I personally feel that I would have tried to have helped Elvis in those last years.
As the book moves on there is a true feeling of love on the pages, and tears soon come to the eyes as you imagine Elvis changing his ways and starting to find peace with himself and a new lease of life. This really is the continuation of his life that we all know never happened.
I hope that all Elvis fans will add this priceless book to their collections  and read it many times over as I have done already. At times you may feel that this is an insult to Elvis, but I assure you that as you move on through the pages you find yourself more and more wanting it to continue.
And at the end you'll find yourself saying one thing only.........BRING ME THE SEQUEL!

A country boy with a guitar walked into a Memphis recording studio one day and changed the world, as we know it. He has been called "The King."  Glenda Ivey, an Elvis fan and author of Silent Revenge and Ripped Apart, gives us a different view of this great showman.
My definition of an Elvis fan is a person who is able to see beyond the glitz and dynamics of a great entertainer. Glenda Ivey is such a fan and a talented writer, she reveals how hard Elvis worked to perfect his art and how he was successful in reaching beyond the footlights and into the souls of his audience. That is what makes "The King" special, and in Wings On A Guitar, Glenda Ivey fills her tiny book with dynamite!
Wings On A Guitar  validated "Elvis." By the way, Glenda is busy with another book about Elvis, Wings of Grace, but Wings On A Guitar, published by Southern Charm Press, is a must read!
Historical events are difficult as a rule, but in the hands of Glenda Ivey's Wings On A Guiter  ... ELVIS LIVES!

Glenda Ivey's WINGS ON A GUITAR - IF ELVIS HADN'T DIED!, is perhaps the most moving novel ever written about the undisputed King Of Rock -n- Roll.  To be honest, I was a bit skeptical as to weather this book could actually hold its own in comparison to the many hundreds of Elvis Presley novels already published. What could this book put on the plate that the others haven't already offered? After all, Glenda had never met or known Elvis personally. I happen to consider myself a huge Elvis fan and I knew that this was no small feat that I myself would not be able to accomplish.
Throwing all pre-conceived notions to the wind, I eagerly delved in with an open mind upon receiving my promotional copy. Let's see if she can prove me wrong?
And prove me wrong is exactly what Glenda did. Wings On A Guitar opens with Elvis in the later days off his career. At this point Elvis is a drug-prescribed junkie who has lost all sense of values and self worth, and who is destined to literally work himself into an early grave.
Perhaps the most chilling aspect of WINGS ON A GUITAR is the relationship with Elvis an his mother, and Elvis' decline after her death. Many of us who love Elvis are quite aware of the close bond that he and his mother shared, but Glenda takes it one step further by introducing the fact that Elvis was literally haunted by his mother after her death. This is something that Glenda brings to the table that to the best of my knowledge no other author ever has.
Glenda also separates herself from the rest by showing Elvis as the real person that he was. A person haunted by the same demons and fears that you or I might be susceptible too, and never portrays him as some kind of demi-God. The ending is quite touching, but I won't give away the beautiful ending that Glenda has so wonderfully penned.
Let's just say that it will leave you with a tear in your eye.

What if? Have you ever played that game?
What if Elvis Presley hadn't died on that fateful day back in 1977? Have you ever wondered what his life might have been like if he had survived?   I'm sure you must have wondered about this. There is hardly a person alive who didn't know about Elvis Presley. Whether or not you loved his music, you knew of him and his fame. He was an icon - The King. He still lives on in his music.
But what if he really lived on and not just in his music and in our hearts? Could he have turned his life around from the tragedy that it had become?
Glenda Ivey has created such a realistic 'what if story' about how Elvis' life could have been had he not died, that I am still wondering if perhaps he did not die on August 16, 1977. What if his death was just a dream? No, make that a nightmare. After reading Ivey's novel - WINGS ON A GUITAR: If Elvis Hadn't Died! -  I'm hoping beyond hope that the story she created so excellently is for real, although I know in my mind that it is not.
For everyone who has ever heard the name of Elvis Presley, and that is most everyone in the world,  this is a must read book. You will want to purchase it and add it to your Elvis collection of memorabilia.

When I was asked to review Wings on a Guitar, by Glenda Ivey, and I initially declined stating "I am the last person on earth who is suitable - I have no interest in Elvis Presley, know next to nothing about him as a person, and I'm a poet and overseas-columnist for the British poetry magazine, Poetry Now. Why me?" my own previously published words were used to counter my disinterest. My own words, thrown back at me, were:
"The more I have thought about it, the more I have realized that poetry and music are almost inseparable, or at least have so much in common…   Even the word 'sonnet' means 'little song'.   What are musical lyrics if not poems?"  . . . Poetry Now, Spring 2001
Coupled with: "I often wonder about the person behind those words, for surely their words are an extension of that person - a 'piece' of that person to some extent? I am often as much, if not more, inspired by the writer and their life, as I am by their writing, if I am fortunate enough to find out just who
the person is behind the writing!" . . . Poetry Now, Autumn 1998
Rather than struggle to counter this argument, I reluctantly agreed with my parting condition being - "If I can't find anything worthwhile or good to write, then I'll write nothing."
Having read the book, I am now in a dilemma because I don't want to write a book review. Why? Because, a few brief paragraphs of what typically constitutes a 'book review,' simply cannot do justice to this spell-binding masterpiece! The "What if he had lived." approach is, to the best of my knowledge, unique in itself concerning anything ever written about Presley.

Love for Elvis Reaffirmed:

As a teenager I watched Elvis on Ed Sullivan, bought every single as it became available, and read every piece of print in the media. I never lost my love for his voice, though I did let his problems in later life tarnish the image.

Glenda's book let me bring back the image of a kind, considerate, and deeply religious southern boy. I found myself so engrossed that I forgot that the book was a work of fiction. Glenda really captured the Elvis I want to believe was still there in the end.

I am eagerly awaiting the sequel due out next year.
